CHEERS BABYYYYY!
NOT a beer drinker but this was kinda smooth
roomie love!

Tuesday

i miss my hair!

I decided, after coming back from deployment in Massachusetts, I've been worn out emotionally, physically, and a tad socially. I was a bit afraid of the adverse effects of stress and summer dryness (needa catch up with the gurus about summer hair care) so I decided to give myself a sew-in...OOPS...I mean use that special grease and magically make some inches grow out of my scalp.

It's only been a week and a half and i want my 'fro back.....I WANT MY AFRO BACK...I. WANT. MY. NATURAL. HAIR. BACK!

Friday

like Janet back in the day

Super late to post this, but eh ok lol. So I did some poetic justice braids on my hair!!!! Took 10 hours and 9 packs of hair. I split the time over two days and wore my hair in a high bun until I finished. I got so many compliments from non-blacks asking me how I did it. This Asian lady at the post office couldn't believe I braided it all by myself. She even called her colleague out of the back room to come see. I loved it and obviously everyone else did too. LOL. And who woulda thunk: all this from a $20 hair style!

Enjoy!

The Positives:
• Great protective style. (Although the front of my hair did have some extremely, minor breakage.)
• Stylish!
• Versatile. You can wear then up, down, curled, regular, skinny, or fat.

The Cons:
• Hard to sleep at night.
• Heavy. I had to wait for them to loosen before I could wear them down. I felt like they were yanking my forehead back.

I wore them for exactly 4 weeks. I plan to do some more, but have them shorter!
What do you think? Like?

Au Natural Ode

A minority of people know I am a writer and have been since high school. Sometimes keep my works, but this one I want to share with everyone. Maybe one day I'll get the courage to do a little spoken-word. hmmm...baby steps. Enjoy!

Au Natural Ode by Jojo

I love the fact people love my hair. I also love the fact people ask me if it's my real hair because they think it's a wig. I love the fact white people always remind me my hair is cool and then tell me how much they wish they could do that with theirs. I love the fact people want to touch my hair. I wear messy styles most of the time so I love the fact it doesn't bother me when they do. Wendy Williams says you have to pop and tease...love the fact it's a different adventure everyday with her. I love the fact I've accepted my shrinkage...she's so stubborn that she'll act anyway she wants. Maybe she's shy because I never was. I love the fact I got over whatever my issue was and started wearing my hair the way it grows out of my scalp. I love the fact that as a black woman I have hella options. Altho I'm wearing my 'fro don't overlook the fact I'll reinstall my virgin Indian. I love the fact I'm still top model fab with both. I love the fact I spend so much time fingering and fluffing it, but I know that I am not my hair. I love the fact that just as a necklace or earrings my hair is an accessory. Actually it's my favorite. I love that people stare at us. Man oh man, does it make she statement effortlessly. I love the fact that she broadcasts my true beauty. I'm not covered by 20-24 inches of another's.  This is my ode to my 'fro. And I love the fact I'm in love with her!

sneaky sneaky me.

Hello Beautiful people =)

I snuck away to Montreal, QC for a spring vacation. My friend, who's a grad student, planned to visit and invited me to go with. I'd never been before and wasn't sure when the oppportunity would strike again so I, without a moment's hesitation, accepted the offer. Not only had I not been, but this was the perfect opportunity to practice my french *beams*.

It took about eleven hours via Amtrak. Little did I know I was in the middle of these people's family reunion. I mean it wasn't really a family reunion, but they sat in the row ahead and in the row behind me. And then they had this annoying little girl who kept talking loudly and screaming. I could go into the whole discipline your children rant, but that's a whole 'nother post.

I was there for four days and four nights. I got HELLA french practice. When people found out I was Anglophone they saw that as a way to practice their English so like 99% of conversations were franglish (french-english mixture). I became more comfortable speaking too...I realized I justneed to talk my time and pronounce the words lol. But speaking with native French speakers is intimidating lol.

I wasn't too much of a tourist. Did do a lil sight-seeing, but for the most part I blended in. Made some new friends and tried some new foods. I did a lot of documenting along the way so there will be tonsvideos and pics up; I'll spread them over the next couple days! Montreal is a beautiful city, Canada is a beautiful contry and I can't wait to return!

I wore my hair in 6 plats on the train. I made a fancy lil bow with this cloth my cousin got me straight from Ghana. I felt like the mother from That's So Raven lol. But my plat-out was BOMB.com. Hella people thought it was a wig!!!! ahahaha

a quick lil something...

...that really ruffled my feathers! My little cousin's father picked me up from the train station yesterday. The first thing he said to me, not even hello, was "Oh Jojo...what is that?!?! What did you do? What's going on with your hair?" I said "What? You don't like my hair?" He says "Looks like you stuck your finger in the light socket."
PAUSE!!!! Hold the fuck up!
This stupid little comment really got under my skin? Now all of a sudden I look crazy because I'm wearing my REAL hair the way God gave it to me??!?! *geez I should've said this but the good comebacks only come after*
I didn't expect him to be stylish, or even have nicer taste, but this comment is just pure ignorant and frustrating.
Life lesson: If you don't have anything nice to say keep your damn mouth closed!

Monday

you had me at HELLO!

Hey lovlies!
When you see me with my unstraightened natural hair, what's the first thing you think? Many people have many different opinions of it. I'm really concerned about the opinions of others,  but the actions of others. This Saturday I lossened my threads, shook out my 20-24" of virgin indian hair, and rocked my roots once again. I had a pretty upscale fundraising gig Saturday night when I broght it out. I wore a Bantu Knot Out with a little bang in my face and very natural make-up (as I prefer).
My coworkers-about 99% white-all tell me how nice my hair is and how they wish they could do that with their hair and how cool it is. The list continues. Last week while conversing with one, she told me how beautiful she thinks it is; how it's a symbolism of true beauty and how hurtful she feels when other cultures try to conform to the European ideaology of beauty. I guess before I tell this story I should back it up a little.
Now it is no secret New Yorkers aren't the friendliest people..like in the whole entire world. I feel like it's my lucky day when someone smiles at me, and if someone says "hi" to me, I've hit the jackpot! This morning while waiting at the train station, I passed a group of elderly, black women. Maybe they sensed my affinity (that's really an obsession) with the elderly. As I walked pass they all starred at me and smiled so hard and made a pleasent effort to indiviually speak to me. I was equally as happy to return the greetings and happily stepped to the facility. While in the bathroom this sparked the topic of this post: is natural hair more inviting? Does it make the women seem more approachable?
When I wear my natural hair, I more frequently get smiles and greetings (especially from white men). People seem to stare more, speak more, and are a little more polite. I get approached many more times with my natural hair then with straight weave. Why? Is it because I am feeling more beautiful on the inside and this is portrayed outwardly? Not sure but it's definitely something to ponder!
I know I am NOT my hair, but it is certainly a big part of me!

RMR: Rocking out on Thirsty Thursday

Hello Sweeties-
The beginning of my senior year at the university I used to rock the FroHawk all of the time. In honor of the almost weekend (what?!), I decided to bring that old thang back. Now I realize how much I missed it! Today I wore my black leather jacket and some black OTK boots and I feel super Rockstar 101 *queues Rihanna & Slash*...
